Two new COVID-19 deaths, 139 cases in Ottawa; many key indicators of spread drop

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is confirming two new COVID-19-related deaths in the city, while it says another 139 residents have tested positive for the virus.

The local pandemic death toll is up to 510 on Monday, May 3. Here's how the deceased break down by age group: one in 30s; three in 40s; 14 in 50s; 56 in 60s; 92 in 70s; 185 in 80s; and 159 in 90s.

Meanwhile, many key indicators of COVID-19 spread in Ottawa continue to drop.

The number of residents in hospital with the virus is down to 107, while 29 remain in intensive care (that number does not include ICU patients brought in from other areas of the province). Acute care beds are at 89 per cent capacity in Ottawa, ICU beds are 72 per cent full and ICU ventilator beds are at 48 per cent capacity.

Ottawa's weekly COVID-19 incidence rate is down to 110.7 per 100,000 residents, which is still more than two-and-a-half times higher than Ontario's COVID-19 'red-control' threshold, but it's only half as high as it was during its peak on April 17.

Residents being tested for COVID-19 are seeing positive results 7 per cent of the time. That figure is nearly triple the 'red-control' threshold, but has fallen more than 4 per cent in the last couple of weeks.

There are still 19 COVID-19 outbreaks at Ottawa healthcare institutions, most of which are group homes, hospitals and shelters. Seven local childcare centres are still on outbreak status, and two other COVID-19 outbreaks are linked to schools.

OPH says it's currently tracking six community outbreaks. One week ago, it was monitoring 18 community outbreaks of the novel coronavirus.

After receiving 23,400 Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine doses on Sunday, the City of Ottawa is up to 362,780 COVID-19 vaccine doses, to date. OPH says 91 per cent of those have been administered, meaning 340,121 residents (40 per cent of all residents 18+) have received at least one shot.

The health unit says it knows of 1,936 active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa.

There have been 24,518 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the city (22,073 resolved) since March of 2020.

Ontario is reporting 3,436 new cases of COVID-19, Monday, including 15 in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit's region, two in the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark district and two in Renfrew County and district.
