Mooney’s Bay curfew will apply for Canada Day long weekend — and possibly beyond

After two successful weekend runs at a city implemented pilot project that had Mooney’s Bay on a curfew, the city will be extending the program for the Canada Day long weekend — and possibly beyond.
This means the park and beach will closed to the public at 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, just like it had done on June 11 and 12, 18 and 19.
“At the time I wrote this e-newsletter, I was in discussions with the city regarding needed resources to take us in to July and August,” city councillor Riley Brockington said in his newsletter. “I strongly believe the park is to be visited and enjoyed by all, but the expectation is that all guests will be respectful and mindful of the park’s rules that will make it a fun experience for everyone.”
The unseasonably warm weather in the spring lead to heavy use of Mooney’s Bay Park in April, May and June, he says.
The crowds were often present almost all day and well into the night.
And this created “many issues,” from drinking alcohol and smoking in the park, tothe presence of dogs (which is not permitted) and crowds that gathered at night, entertained by professionals DJs hosting dance parties.
So Brockington requested that Public Works up their presence in the park and wrote to the city manager alerting them to the issues and how to possibly address them.
As a result, the presence of bylaw and police officers have been increased — a move Brockington says has been successful in addressing many of the issues.
It is unclear when Brockington will hear from the city about the possibility of extending the pilot project.
