UPDATE: Parents unhappy with timing of play structure removal at Central Public School

UPDATE, August 24: Jenn Crozier, the mother of a 10-year-old who is scheduled to begin Grade 5 in a few weeks at Central Public School, has disabled new donations to the GoFundMe page which had been looking to raise money for a new play structure at the school.

A group of Renfrew parents and community supporters are determined to raise money to purchase new pieces of playground equipment for the children of Central Public School (CPS), even though it means defying a 'no fundraising' rule put in place by the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB).

Jenn Crozier, the mother of a 10-year-old who is scheduled to begin Grade 5 in a few weeks at CPS, recently launched a GoFundMe page.

“We have had a fundraising committee in place at Central for almost three years, as we knew the day would come when the structures would be removed,” she said. “Although we knew the equipment was going to go, none of us expected to see it removed a few weeks before the kids go back to school. Worse yet, our own school board sends down an order there will be no fundraising of any kind involving a school while COVID is still very active. That is the part that is most disappointing.”

It is not only the timing that upsets Crozier, but she is frustrated at the way the news was delivered to her.

“I didn’t receive a call from someone at the school board, but the message was sent to me through the principal who was asked to reach out to me on their behalf,” she said. “They wanted to let me know that GoFundMe accounts were not permitted, according to board rules. I have replied with sadness [regarding] their position, but also to say that this was neither a board nor school initiative and that I stated as such within the campaign. It would have been respectful to perhaps have a board member call and I may have had a chance to explain, but that chance is gone.”

Crozier, who makes no apologies for being very emotional when discussing the issue, said there are a few factors at play that directly affect any fundraising activities. She acknowledges the estimated cost of $50,000 is daunting, and that is why the group felt a GoFundMe account would help given the financial realities of families in the area.

Fundraising was initiated by the school's council (which is comprised of staff members and parents) a couple of years ago in planning toward the inevitable need of a new structure, but the effort has been stymied due to challenges brought on by COVID-19.

“There is a definite socio-economic barrier for many families involved with the school and the reality is we just could not burden future school councils having to pay off a loan,” said Crozier. “No child should have to feel left behind in basic fundamental school experiences.”

Another aspect Crozier thinks the school board has overlooked is the physical and mental benefits that a play structure would help promote.

“As research clearly supports, recess and free play that naturally incorporates exercise is so very important to the physical and mental wellbeing of a child,” she said. “I understand and respect that the school board has to have rules and guidelines in place, but I wonder if their focus isn't misplaced on having the same rules for everyone, instead of making sure each school has equal footing and support to be the best it can be.”

Crozier said she will continue to administer the GoFundMe account and she will not involve the school board or CPS in any aspect of the fundraiser. It is under her name and the goal will be to raise money to help for the installation of new playground equipment.

“All we have ever wanted is to help the children who attend CPS and if the school board could assist in helping offset the costs, that would be great as $50,000 is a lot of money for one little school,” she said. “I'm not seeking a handout for the school but a hand-up, so that their students can have the same opportunities for fun play and exercise.”

Attempts were made to reach RDSDB Board staff through both email and telephone regarding this issue but no response was ever received
