By Mike Vlasveld

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is reporting that a number of indicators of local COVID-19 spread are down, slightly.

Despite 46 new cases of the virus confirmed in the city on Tuesday, the number of active cases the the health unit knows about is down from 501 to 475.

The number of Ottawa residents in hospital with COVID-19 is also down to seven (six in intensive care).

There have been 413 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Ottawa over the last seven days.

OPH has counted 224 cases of the Delta variant in Ottawa over the last 30 days.

No new COVID-19-related deaths are being reported on Tuesday. There have been 595 COVID-19-related deaths in Ottawa since the beginning of the pandemic, with two recently associated with the Delta variant.

There continue to be outbreaks at eight Ottawa schools, three childcare centres and one group home. The health unit is also monitoring two community outbreaks linked to religious organizations.

Ontario is reporting 574 new cases of COVID-19 and eight additional deaths on Tuesday. Health Minister Christine Elliott says 434 of the new cases are in individuals who are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status.

OPH says 88 per cent of Ottawa residents over the age of 12 have at least one COVID-19 vaccine and 82 per cent have been fully immunized. In residents 18-plus, 87 per cent have one shot and 82 per cent have had both.

According to the health unit, the rate of infection among Ottawa's unvaccinated vaccine-eligible population is still 11 times higher than it is for the fully vaccinated population. OPH says the local rate of infection per 100,000 residents for those vaccinated against the virus is still to 6.5, whereas the rate for those unvaccinated (or vaccinated with one dose under 14 days) is 73.3. The rate per 100,000 residents for those who are waiting for their second shot is up to 26.

Residents being tested for COVID-19 are seeing positive results 3.1 per cent of the time.

There have been 29,384 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa (28,314 resolved) since March of 2020.
