Driver who stopped for turtle charged after accident on Hwy. 60

The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged a driver who caused an accident on a portion of Highway 60 after slowing or stopping for a turtle crossing.

On June 10, 2026 around 6 p.m., officers responded to a two-vehicle collision that caused a portion of Highway 60 to close in North Algona-Wilberforce Township. An investigation found that an eastbound car slowed down or stopped on the road while a turtle crossed.

A car travelling behind the stopped vehicle was unable to slow down and hit the car from behind. The highway closed for several hours to allow for an investigation and clean up from the accident’s aftermath.

The Ottawa driver has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

The OPP reminds vehicles that stopping in a live lane of traffic creates a significant risk to them and other road users. Should you encounter wildlife on the roadway, do not stop in traffic lanes. Contact police if assistance is needed.
