City urged to buy abandoned rail corridor for $740,000 as part of long-term transportation plans

Ottawa's finance and economic development committee is being urged to purchase a former CN Rail corridor, with the idea of using it as part of the city's long-term transportation plans.

A report that will be presented to the committee on Tuesday recommends that the city buy the former railway corridor known as the Beachburg Railway Subdivision, at a cost of $740,000.

The abandoned corridor, which is approximately 35.2 km-long and 30 m wide, extends from 64.5 metres north of the junction with the Renfrew rail corridor in the Greenbelt, through Kanata North and the rural area to Morris Island Drive, just east of the Ottawa River.

In June 2020, the city confirmed its plan to acquire the corridor with the intention of protecting it for future use as a year-round recreational trail.

If the finance and economic development committee approves the recommendation, it would go before council on October 13.
