In honour and memory: Ottawa Butterfly Run raising funds, awareness of infant loss

By Alex Black

The fifth annual Ottawa Butterfly Run is being held this weekend in support of bereaving parents.

The annual family walk/run aims to support anyone who has experienced miscarriage, infant loss and/or infertility, and all proceeds go to support Roger Neilson House, on the grounds of CHEO.

It is estimated that one in four women will experience miscarriage or pregnancy loss and that one in six Canadians experience infertility.

RNH offers a perinatal hospice program which provides support to families whose babies are likely to die before, during or shortly after birth. RNH also offers a perinatal loss bereavement support group for parents who have lost a pregnancy over 20 weeks, as well as infant death.

The Ottawa Butterfly is taking place this Saturday and Sunday. In order to adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines, the volunteer-run event will be largely virtual for a second year in a row, with participants walking in small groups.

While there is no official start time or location, participants conduct their own walk and follow progress with participating groups virtually. There are also a list of group walk locations for those who would like someone to walk with.

All participants are encouraged to take plenty of photos and post to social media using the hashtag #butterflyrunottawa2021.
