NCC again closing Queen Elizabeth Driveway on weekends to encourage recreational activity

By Mike Vlasveld

As it did around this same time last year, the National Capital Commission (NCC) creating more outdoor space for exercise by opening a section of the Queen Elizabeth Driveway for non-motorized recreational activity.

Starting on January 15, 2022, the road will be closed to vehicular traffic, from Fifth Avenue to Somerset Street, every Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The NCC says the closure provides residents living in the most densely populated part of Ottawa to get outdoor exercise, while practising physical distancing.

In the event of heavy snowfall, the NCC says the project could be temporarily interrupted.

The commission plans to inform the public as soon as possible, via social media, when a snow removal closure is planned.

The NCC urges all users to exercise caution, respect working crews and equipment, and obey signage and flag persons on-site.
