Ottawa snow storm cleanup expected to take days

By Mike Vlasveld

City of Ottawa snow removal crews are out in full force to clear roadways, bike lanes and sidewalks, but it is expected to be days before everything is back to being fully usable for residents.

City officials say there are more than 500 pieces of equipment on Ottawa's 13,000 kilometres of roadway, Monday, January 17, 2022. The focus is on arterial and primary routes, Monday afternoon.

Residential streets are expected to get cleared starting in the evening hours through Tuesday. The city is hoping to have sidewalks cleared on a similar timeline, but says it could take days before everything is clear.

In the meantime, the city is asking residents to clear snow away from their hot water and furnace vents, as well as to help dig out fire hydrants.

City of Ottawa garbage collection has been pushed back by one day this week.

Environment Canada says more than 41 centimetres of snow has fallen at the Ottawa International Airport, which brings this snow event into the top 10 of all single-event snowfalls ever recorded in Ottawa. At times snowfall rates in excess of 10 cm per hour were reported in Ottawa on Monday morning.
