City recovers money from fraudulent transaction involving Salvation Army Ottawa Booth Centre
The City of Ottawa has now recovered all of the funds that were lost in a fraudulent transaction that happened in the month of April of 2022.
A memo from Wendy Stephanson, the City of Ottawa's chief financial officer released on May 9, confirmed the City of Ottawa was able to retrieve all of the $558,000 lost to a fraudulent transaction that involved a partnering agency, which was later confirmed to be the Salvation Army Ottawa Booth Centre.
“Staff identified the fraud, took immediate action and retained external legal counsel to expedite the court process and necessary legal actions to recover the funds,” the memo reads. “As a result of the immediate action, the City has recovered all of the funds fraudulently taken.”

No personal information was compromised nor shared by the City of Ottawa.
This isn’t the first time the City of Ottawa was the victim of a scam. In 2019, the City lost $130,000 through an email scam.
