Two Ottawa men face over 100 firearm, drug trafficking charges following sweep

Ottawa police’s Guns and Gangs Unit’s have arrested two men after they seized multiple handguns and drugs.

Targeting firearms and drug trafficking in Ottawa, police initiated Project Street Sweeper, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) confirmed in a news release issued Wednesday, June 8.

The investigation started in January 2022 and it culminated with a search warrant on Merkley Drive near Wilkie Drive in Fallingbrook.

Among the items seized were:

A total of 105 criminal charges for firearm and drug trafficking offences were laid against a 27-year-old man named Kyle Broomer of Ottawa.

He attended an Ottawa court to show cause earlier on Wednesday, June 8.

Also charged is Ali Ayad Al Mezel, 32, of Ottawa. He has been charged with several firearm-related offences and will appear in court on Thursday, June 9.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation and further charges may be laid.
