Local CUPE members demand repeal of Bill 124, better funding for public education

Local union members gathered in Ottawa to demand the Ontario government repeal Bill 124 and increase funding for public education.

“Among other things, what we're calling for is for the government to appeal wage restraint legislation and commit to the funding necessary for public education in Ontario,” says Erin Grant, lead organizer for CUPE 2357, which includes over 2,200 education workers in the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB).

Bill 124 caps salary increases for public sector employees, including teachers, nurses, social workers and children's aid workers at one per cent per year.

Union representatives delivered 925 letters for Ontario Premier Doug Ford to the office of Conservative Member of Provincial Parliament for Kanata-Carleton Merrilee Fullerton at 80 Michael Cowpland Drive in Kanata at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 23.

Members also dropped off a summary of  'In Harms Way,' a report regarding harassment and violence against education workers, as well as a report on the impacts of cuts against education workers over the past 10 years.
