An Ottawa resident has died after being struck by a garbage truck on July 4.
The fatal incident took place just before 9:30 a.m. in the area of Joliffe Street and Tupper Avenue.
A woman in her 70s was treated at the scene for life-threatening injuries before being taken to hospital in critical condition.
Alain Gonthier, the City of Ottawa's manager of public works, said in a memo to council on Tuesday, July 5 that the person died.
“The public works department and our contractor, Miller Waste Systems, are saddened by this tragic incident and extend our deepest condolences to this individual’s family and friends,” the memo said. “Safety is a top priority for the public works department, and the City as a whole. We are committed to working with the police and contractor to support the investigation and any resulting recommendations, and will ensure Council is kept apprised at the conclusion of the investigation.”
Gonthier said the City of Ottawa is working closely with the contractor to see that appropriate support is in place for the operator involved.
“As this matter is currently under investigation by the Ottawa police, the City will not be providing further comment on this incident,” he added.
