The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has launched an investigation after several weapons, including handguns, ammunition and knives, were discovered at two separate residences at Perley Health.

In a statement released on Friday, Aug. 19, the long-term care residence said that staff immediately secured the locations and contacted police upon their discovery at the Russell Road campus.

Three handguns and two knives were found in the first room and when they entered the second room, as part of a security check, staff found 14 handguns and rifles in an unlocked cabinet, ammunition, knives and other firearm paraphernalia.

“A locked gun cabinet was also found in the second unit which has been unoccupied for several weeks while the apartment tenant has been hospitalized,” the statement said.

The statement added that the health and safety of their residents, tenants, staff and visitors as well as all community members, remains the number one priority at Perley Health and they're reviewing all policies related to possession and storage of weapons on site.

The investigation is ongoing.
