Glengarry Memorial Hospital resumes 24-hour emergency services

The Glengarry Memorial Hospital, located in Alexandria, Ontario, is resuming full use of its emergency department for seven days a week starting on Monday, Aug. 22.

The announcement was made in a news release on on Aug. 22, as the hospital has resumed 24-hour emergency services after staffing shortages forced the eastern Ontario's hospital to operate on reduced hours for the past few weeks.

The Glengarry Memorial Hospital's emergency department was temporarily closed from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily on Friday, July 15. The plan was to keep the emergency department closed overnights until Aug. 3.

Hospital officials intended to reopen the emergency department, offering full services by Aug. 3, but in a news release on Aug. 2, the hospital said staffing shortages  impacted the decision.

“The priority is providing safe patient care at every encounter,” said Robert Alldred-Hughes, president and chief executive officer of the Glengarry Memorial Hospital. “Regular operations would not have resumed if we could not do so safely. Although we are at a point where we can safely resume 24-hour seven days per week emergency services, our staffing remains delicate and cannot guarantee that closures may not be required in the future as the safety of our patients and staff is our priority.”
