OPP conducting traffic safety blitz over Labour Day long weekend

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be patrolling roadways over this coming Labour Day long weekend.
The long weekend traffic safety campaign will focus on the 'BIG 4,' impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and improper seatbelt use.
- Impaired driving – Driving while your ability is affected by alcohol and or drugs is a criminal offence in Canada. If convicted, you could lose your licence, be fined, or receive jail time.
- Distracted driving – Driving without your full attention is distracted driving and if convicted you could receive demerit points, fine, licence suspension or even jail time.
- Aggressive driving – Aggressive driving is speeding, following too closely behind another vehicle, not stopping at posted stop signs or passing another vehicle when it is not safe to do so. These offences have varying fines and demerit points.
- Seatbelts – Every person travelling in a motor vehicle must wear a seatbelt or use a child car seat, and drivers are responsible for ensuring that all passengers under 16 years of age are using a seatbelt or child car seat properly. Failing to do this will result in a fine and demerit points.
Drivers who engage in distracted driving and other high risk driving behaviours endanger their lives and the lives of others, said OPP sergeant Chris Miller in a release.
“The OPP is committed to public safety on our roadways, and this is a shared responsibility with motorists who need to make safe driving a priority.”
