Labour Day parade celebrates unions and worker accomplishments
Ottawa union members will be marching from City Hall on Monday to celebrate Labour Day.
Sean McKenney, the president of the Ottawa and District Labour Council, told The Sam Laprade Show on Friday, Sept. 2, that it’s an opportunity for workers to come together and celebrate their accomplishments, adding that Ottawa was one of the first Canadian cities to have a Labour Day parade.
McKenney noted that the Labour Council has several unions representing about 50,000 workers in Ottawa.

“Those that are driving our buses or working on the buses, those that are working in grocery stores, those that are in our schools with our children and their students…those in healthcare, are all part of the Labor Council,” he said.
The upcoming municipal election is also an important day for the Labour Council, McKenney said, and they would like to see elected individuals understand the significant changes that workplaces are undergoing.
“We need government, we need business, we need labour, all working together in the betterment and the best interest of the community,” he said.
