Mayoral candidate Nour Kadri weighs in on policing in Ottawa

By CityNews Ottawa

Nour Kadri, a professor at the University of Ottawa, is one of 14 candidates running to be Ottawa's next mayor.

A new mayor will be elected by Ottawa residents on Oct. 24 as Jim Watson, the city's longest running mayor, announced he is not seeking re-election.

Kadri joined Wake Up With Rob Snow on Oct. 20 and said it's easy for certain groups to call for ideas such as defunding the police. Should he be elected Ottawa's next mayor come Oct. 24, Kadri would add roughly $8 million to tackle issues such as addiction and mental health.

He said policing is just one link in the chain.

“We should be resisting cheap and easy criticism of the police based on biased views of a few special interest groups,” he said. “On the other hand, when we look at public safety, policing is just one element.”

He also provided his thoughts on the hiring of a new police chief.

“The Ottawa Police Services Board and their chair, they are leaving in the next couple of weeks, and they shouldn't be hiring a new police chief in the 11th hour,” he said.
