SIU clears Ottawa police officers in death of suspect in Anoka Street stabbings

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) in the shooting death of a man during a stabbing attack in the Alta Vista area in the summer.

Three officers responded to a home in the 1200 block of Anoka Street around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, June 27.

Anne-Marie Ready, 50, and her daughter, Jasmine Ready, 15, had been stabbed to death by Joshua Graves, 21, and when police arrived at the scene, Graves was slashing at Catherine Ready, 19, with a knife.

Graves was ordered to drop the knife, and when he refused, one officer opened fire. According to the SIU, Graves was struck multiple times, falling to his back on the roadway, and one of the rounds struck Ready in the lower left leg.

The two other officers on scene then ordered Graves to drop the knife, but he sat up and began to swing the knife in the officers' direction. Both officers fired their weapons multiple times at that point and Graves was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ready was transported to hospital suffering from a fractured lower right leg due to the gunshot wound, as well as cuts to her forehead and left hand.

SIU director Joseph Martino said there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the shooting and the case has been closed.
