YMCA-YWCA selling flagship downtown facility

The YMCA-YWCA announced on Oct. 27 it is selling its flagship downtown facility because the aging building needs millions of dollars worth of work.

In a release announcing its decision to sell the property, the board of directors for the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region said selling the Argyle Avenue property will be part of a broader plan to transition to a new facility that better meets the community's needs.

“Built in 1969, this building has come to the end of its life cycle and can no longer meet the needs of our community without significant infrastructure upgrades at the cost of $38 million,” Bob Gallagher, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region said.

The Taggart Family YMCA-YWCA  will remain open in the near future, as the sale process is expected to take up to two years.

“Over the next two years, staff and volunteers will continue to provide the critical services that support the health and well-being of our community, while ensuring the least amount of disruption to our clients and community we serve, especially for those who call this Y facility their home,” Susannah Crabtree, the chair of the board of directors said.

During the time it takes for the sale to complete, the Y says it will work with government partners and donors to find a new location.

In January, the YMCA-YWCA sold its Ruddy Family Y facility on Centrum Boulevard in Orléans, which was permanently closed.
