Thieves use Ottawa restaurant to get to neighbouring jewelry store

By Anil Jhalli

It's a story that you only see in the movies.

And Moe Hussain still can't believe it.

On Sunday, Feb. 5, thieves broke into his restaurant, Moe's BBQ on Bank Street in the Towngate Shopping Plaza, robbed it and cut a giant hole in the wall that is shared with Le’s Jewellery next door.

“I came in and I saw my sink was dismantled and I was so confused,” he said on The Sam Laprade Show on Feb. 7. “Nothing was ripped a part and it was done so neatly and I thought, is this a prank?”

But it wasn't a prank. Hussain went to the dining room and saw even more damage, including the hole he shared with the jewelry store next door.

“It made sense after, they cut a hole to get next door,” he said.

Hussain said the work looked like it was done by a group of professionals who knew exactly what they were doing as they also ripped out the security system.

“They took the hard drive and the DVR that records all the video footage,” said the restaurant owner.

He said he spoke with his neighbours, who have been in business for 15 years.

“They are really impacted and just shocked,” he said.

Hussain is forced to close his restaurant until further notice as the damage is being assessed.

“The police are doing everything they can,” he said.
