New top doctor named for Renfrew County

By Alex Black

The Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) will soon have a new Chief Medical Officer of Health.

On April 3, Dr. Jason Morgenstern takes over as top doctor, replacing Dr. Robert Cushman, who decided to retire.

“Dr. Morgenstern is a well-qualified and committed public health physician who grew up in Renfrew County,” said the RCDHU in a release. “He currently works with Halton Region Public Health, where his portfolio includes health protection, disease surveillance, and emergency preparedness.”

Dr. Morgenstern is also a public health and preventive medicine specialist, as well as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Robert Cushman announced his retirement late last year, saying he would not renew his contract after December 31, 2022.

As of January 1, 2023, Dr. Ian Gemmill has been acting as medical officer of health on an interim basis.
