The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority issues flood warning

The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has issued a flood warning for Dalhousie Lake as water levels continue to rise with the remaining snowmelt entering the watershed.

The Clyde River is also under a flood warning, as flows on the Clyde and Fall rivers are steadily increasing and expected to continue for the next two days. However, flows within the Indian and Carp Rivers have peaked and are expected to trend downward.

The MVCA has warned that smaller creeks, tributaries, and ditches are full and overflowing in numerous areas of the watershed, and parents are reminded to educate their children about the dangers of hypothermia and playing near ice-covered surfaces or fast-flowing water.

Residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas are urged to take precautions to protect their property, including ensuring that sump pumps are clear, functional, and equipped with a backwater valve, having a portable backup generator and pump, and removing items that could float away as water levels increase.

Residents are also advised to keep emergency phone numbers handy and familiarize themselves with their municipality’s emergency preparedness plan. The MVCA’s website provides additional information on water levels and flow data, as well as watershed conditions messages.
