City of Ottawa approves fourth year of electric kick scooter pilot

By CityNews Ottawa

The City of Ottawa has approved continuing its electric kick scooter pilot for a fourth year in 2023, following an update on the third year of the program.

Despite a shorter season and smaller operating area with fewer vehicles, there was a slight decline in ridership, but the volume of trips shows a continued demand for the program.

For the upcoming season, the City will allow the same two providers from 2022 to offer 900 shared e-scooters, while maintaining the requirements and restrictions to address improper riding and parking.

In addition, the fee structure will be changed to ensure sufficient resources to manage the program while keeping it revenue neutral. The City will also work with providers to refine and improve the program, and improve ways to report and track issues or concerns.

If the 2023 season is successful, the General Manager of Planning, Real Estate and Economic Development will have the authority to continue the pilot in 2024.
