Gatineau remains on alert as Ottawa River water levels fluctuate

By CityNews Ottawa

The first spring freshet peak was reached on April 22, but water levels in the Ottawa River have seen a slight drop since then. However, with the current and expected rainfall, as well as melting snow up north, water levels are expected to rise again from Monday onwards.

This could bring water levels back to around last Friday’s levels, according to the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board (ORRPB).

ORRPB warns that water levels could continue to swing back and forth for several days, despite remaining well below historical levels. In light of this, Gatineau is urging residents to remain vigilant and closely monitor the situation as the weather forecast for the second part of the week is still uncertain.

Gatineau crews are closely monitoring road conditions and some streets are restricted to local traffic only. The city is encouraging residents to check the interactive map at gatineau.ca/crue for updates.

The city is reminding everyone to avoid areas at risk and exercise caution when driving or boating on flooded streets. Fast-moving vehicles and watercrafts can create waves that may cause further damage.

Gatineau will continue to update residents as the situation evolves. Residents are encouraged to sign up for text and e-mail alerts at gatineau.ca to stay informed.
