Bear put down during failed relocation attempt in Kanata

A bear has been put down after relocation efforts failed in Kanata on Monday.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) responded to a call regarding a bear in a residential area in the early evening, believed to be the same animal that has been seen recently in residential areas in the west end.

Upon arrival, officers found the animal in close proximity to homes and deemed it to be a significant public safety risk.

According to police, officers worked to safely remove the bear from the area, but after exhausting all available options, decided the bear could not be safely relocated.

In order to ensure the safety of residents in the area, the bear was put down, something police recognize is not the ideal outcome.

In a statement on social media, police say it was a necessary action to prevent harm to the community.

“We appreciate the concern that has been expressed about this incident, and we want to assure the public that we will continue to work closely with our partners to promote wildlife safety.”
