Province announces $24.1-million investment into Ottawa affordable housing

The Ontario government has announced a $24.1-million investment into affordable housing in Ottawa.

The funding will go to support up to 138 of 271 affordable and supportive units in the Mikinak development, which will house people residing in the emergency shelter system and offsite facilities, including hotels and motels.

The development, which will be located at 715 Mikinak Road near Thorncliffe Park, will include a mix of unit sizes and varied levels of affordability.

The province’s minister of housing, Steve Clark, says he is pleased the government was able to support what he is calling a ‘life-saving’ initiative,

“Instead of ad hoc or temporary housing arrangements, these Ontarians will have access to safe, new supportive housing that will provide them with the stability and the opportunity that they need to succeed.”

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says this project comes after a lot of open dialogue and collaboration with the province.

“It comes at a very critical time and it demonstrates that we can work together towards out common goal of ending chronic homelessness by building more affordable housing and supportive housing right here in Ottawa.”

The housing project, a joint initiative between the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Community Housing Corporation, is projected to open in 2024.
