Thunderstorm watch ends for Ottawa

By CityNews Ottawa staff

A thunderstorm watch for the capital issued earlier today has ended.

It was one of two “watches” issued by Environment Canada earlier this afternoon, the other being a tornado watch.

A thunderstorm warning was issued earlier today, which later turned into a thunderstorm watch.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads,” said the weather agency. “Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.”

Environment Canada said a tornado was possible, with strong wind gusts up to 90 km/h producing toonie sized hail tornado downpours.

“In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is recommended you take the following actions: Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet,” Environment Canada said. “Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.”

The weather temporary shut down Canada plans across the city, including downtown celebrations.
