Be very careful around all waterway in the Rideau Valley Watershed.
That’s the message from the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) following several large rain events over the last few weeks and even more rain in the forecast.
The RVCA says observed rainfall amounts across the watershed are significantly above normal over the last month and Environment Canada is forecasting 50 millimetres (mm) to 100 mm of rain over the next seven days.
The authority goes on to say water levels and flows are generally higher than average for this time of year across the entire watershed. While no significant riverine flooding is anticipated, levels are expected to remain seasonally high in all waterways over the next week.
Until the water levels and flows recede, the RVCA advises the public to “exercise extreme caution around all waterbodies and dam structures and remind children about the dangers of playing near open water.”
Boaters and swimmers using the Rideau River and other larger water bodies are also advised to use extreme caution over the next few days.
This watershed conditions statement is in effect until Friday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. unless otherwise stated.
