Ottawa emphasizes on defence with first three picks of PWHL draft

Ottawa’s Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) roster is taking shape.

The 2023 PWHL Draft took place on Monday, Sept. 18, and Ottawa’s yet to be named PWHL team selected American defenceman Savannah Harmon with the fifth overall pick.

The 27-year-old won gold with the U.S. team at the 2023 women’s world championships and a silver medal with the U.S. 2022 Olympic team.

With its round two and three picks, Ottawa continued its trend on focusing on defence by selecting Ashton Bell in round two and Jincy Dunne in round three.

The rest of Ottawa’s draft picks are as follows:

  • Gabrielle Hughes, forward, round four
  • Hayley Scamurra, forwardm round five
  • Daryl Watts, forward, round six
  • Aneta Tejjralova, round seven
  • Katerina Mrazova, round eight
  • Zoe Boyd, defence, round nine
  • Kristin Della Rovere, forward, round 10
  • Lexi Adzija, forward, round 11
  • Sandra Abstreiter, forward, round 12
  • Amanda Boulier, defence, round 13
  • Caitrin Lonergan, forward, round 14
  • Audrey-Ann Veillette, forward, round 15

 

Goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer and forwards Brianne Jenner and Emily Clark all signed with Ottawa as free agents. 

The team will play out of TD Place Arena when the season kicks off in January of 2024 and Carla MacLeod, who as a player is a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2006, 2010) with Canada who also won four IIHF Women’s World Championship medals (one gold and three silver), will be behind the bench when Ottawa’s PWHL team hits the ice starting in January of 2024.
