Launch of Trillium Line delayed until spring of 2024

The launch of the Trillium Line launch has been delayed once again.

At the City of Ottawa’s light-rail transit subcommittee meeting on Friday, Sept. 29, transit services general manager Renée Amilcar made the announcement noting that part of this latest delay is due to making sure the trains run properly.

“It is more important to demonstrate that the service is reliable over an extended period of running time,” said Amilcar. “This additional time, including during winter, will be used to further test, monitor and observe the performance of the system to make sure it is ready for service.”

Amilcar gave no firm date as to when the line could be ready.

This is the third delay of the Trillium Line, which is slated to run between Bayview Station and Riverside South, with a spur to the Ottawa International Airport.

Construction of the line was originally scheduled to be completed in August of last year, but was delayed until September of 2023.

“We know some customers will be disappointed by this news,” added Amilcar. “But, we have heard very clearly that Ottawa doesn’t want a system that was rushed.”

OC Transpo was hoping to launch the line in November of this year.

Amilcar said there are still only five of the nine trains being tested on the line, with further maintenance work still needed.
