Ottawa Public Health (OPH) said flu shots and updated COVID-19 vaccines will be available to high-risk patients and health care workers this week.

The vaccines will be available to the first groups as of Wednesday, Oct. 11, including people living in long-term care and group homes, people aged 65 and older, as well as children between six months and five years of age.

The shots will open up to the entire population at the end of the month.

The updated COVID-19 shots were reformulated to target the new XBB. 1.5 strain of the virus.

OPH said the flu and updated COVID-19 vaccines will be available for the following residents, as of Oct. 11, 2023:

  • Health care workers and first responders
  • Individuals at high-risk for influenza (flu) and/or COVID-19 related complications or hospitalization including:
  • Residents and staff of congregate living settings (e.g., chronic care facilities, retirement homes)
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Individuals who are 65 years of age or older
  • First Nation, Inuit or Métis people and their household members
  • All children six months to under five years of age
  • Individuals six months of age and older with underlying health conditions per NACI
  • Members of racialized and equity-deserving communities

OPH will make the vaccines available to all Ottawa residents as of Monday, Oct. 30.
