One person was injured during a kitchen fire at an apartment building on Russell Road late Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 5:30 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received a notification from a monitoring agency reporting alarms going off at a building in the 1900 block of Russell Road, between Cuba Avenue and Smyth Road.

Shortly afterwards, occupants of the building called 9-1-1 to report visible smoke.

A working fire was declared at 5:37 p.m. as a fire crew approaching the scene confirmed visible flames coming from a unit on the fifth floor, and upon arrival, firefighters located a kitchen fire.

A secondary fire crew met the elderly resident of the unit in the stairwell as they were being helped down the stairs by other residents.

Firefighters carried the resident outside and began assessment and treatment for smoke inhalation and burns until the Ottawa Paramedic Service could arrive on scene.

OFS also helped multiple residents to safety after they had become lost and disoriented in the hallway of the fifth floor.

The fire was declared under control by 6 p.m. and there were no additional injuries reported.
