Standout defensive lineback Mauldin extends contract with Redblacks

Lorenzo Mauldin IV is staying with the Ottawa Redblacks for another season.

The CFL team announced Tuesday it had extended Mauldin’s contract by one-year.

Mauldin, a 31-year-old Sacramento native, is the 2022 CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award winner. He began his CFL career in 2019, spending two seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before joining the Redblacks in 2022.

“The truth of the matter is Ottawa embraced me and my family, and that’s what Ottawa is to me: family,” Mauldin said.

The New York Jets drafted Mauldin in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft and he played 26 games with the team.

The six-foot-five, 265-pound Mauldin followed up a career season with 29 tackles, five sacks, and a forced fumble in 2023, through 17 games. He was also named to the CFL’s Week 15 Pro Football Focus Honour Roll, following Ottawa’s game against the B.C. Lions.

Ottawa also extended global linebacker Tyron Vrede’s contract for another year on Monday. The 27-year-old from Amsterdam has spent all three of his CFL seasons with the Redblacks.

The Redblacks will kick off the 2024 season against the Blue Bombers on June 13.
