OC Transpo launching ‘on demand’ buses in Ottawa’s east end

The transit service will test out a pilot project offering on-demand buses in the city starting on Feb. 11.

During the soft launch of the project, OC Transpo will be offering services in Blackburn Hamlet, to and from Blair Station and Gloucester Centre, the city said in a memo from the transit services department.

During the first phase, those buses will only operate on Sundays from 9:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and select holidays.

OC Transpo said route 28 will continue to operate on weekdays and Saturdays, but will also run on Feb. 11 as part of the pilot.

During the pilot, instead of using a fixed schedule, customers will be able to book same-day and next-day trips between bus stops in those areas using the transit rider app, or by calling the OC Transpo customer service line.

The transit service said it’s planning to extend the service to include Saturdays. They’re hoping to gather customer feedback on their website or through their customer service line.

“The potential benefits of on-demand transit service can include shorter wait and travel times, shorter walking distances, increased travel options for customers, and lower emissions,” wrote OC Transpo in a memo to the city.

The pilot project is expected to run until further notice.
