Man in critical condition following icy rescue after vehicle fell into Ottawa River

A man was rescued Thursday morning after a vehicle fell into the icy Ottawa River in Gatineau from Jacques Cartier Street.

Gatineau police were dispatched to the scene shortly after 8:30 a.m. following a call into 911.

The Gatineau fire department responded and was able to recover the man.

He was taken to hospital by Outaouais Paramedic in critical condition. The current condition of the man is unknown.

Police closed Jacques Cartier Street due to the investigation, but it was reopened in the afternoon.

Investigators continue to piece together what happened and will provide an update when the cause is determined.

It is unclear at the time of writing if the rescued man was the driver of the vehicle or if there were any other passengers.
