Ottawa faces colder weather, flurries this weekend

The nation’s capital is experiencing a quick cold snap this Family Day weekend, with temperatures dropping under the average low this time of year.

Environment Canada forecasts a high of -7 C Saturday morning. The wind chill will make it feel closer to -23 C in the morning and -8 C in the afternoon. It is also expected to be cloudy with 40 per cent chances of flurries in the morning.

Saturday evening is forecast to have a low of -16 C with 60 per cent chance of flurries. The average low this time of year is -13 C.

Sunday is looking similar with 40 per cent chance of flurries in the morning, followed by 2 cm of flurries near noon, high of -2 C. The wind chill will also be around -23 C in the morning. The evening low is forecast to be -14 C, slightly below the average of -13 C.

With the colder temperatures, there is some hope that Rideau Canal Skateway could open for the Family Day long weekend.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) says they’re “doing everything they can to open the Skateway”.

The NCC says crews flooded the Skateway Friday morning to try and thicken the ice. They are planning to assess the thickness and quality on Saturday.

Environment Canada says Monday is expected to be Sunny with a high of -6 C and an evening low of -14 C.
