Tim Hortons testing ‘environmentally friendly’ lids in Ottawa and Gatineau
Some Tim Hortons locations in Ottawa and Gatineau are testing new plastic-free, fibre coffee lids, says the company in a release on Monday.
It is part of a six-week project to help reduce single-use plastics in Tim Hortons stores by helping to develop a guest-friendly alternative to plastic lids that are easier to compost or recycle.
“We’ve worked hard on developing a fibre lid that feels like our current lids but is plastic-free,” says Paul Yang, Tim Hortons’ senior director of procurement, sustainability and packaging.

“These fibre lids are part of our five-year journey to develop more innovative solutions for all our packaging.”
Over the past year, the coffee giant has transitioned several packaging items from plastic, including introducing wooden and fibre cutlery and replacing plastic lids on Loaded Bowls with fibre lids.
A similar fibre coffee lid was trialled across Vancouver in early 2023 and the company says it helped reduce the use of more than 3.3 million plastic lids. Another 12-week test was conducted in Prince Edward Island earlier this year.
Starting this week, the new lids are expected to be rolled out at the following locations:
