Severe thunderstorm warnings dropped but not before clouds darkened Ottawa skies

A thunderstorm-warned storm approaching Ottawa brought possible strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Severe thunderstorm warnings have now ended in Ottawa and surrounding areas.

The warning was first issued shortly after 4:30 p.m. threatening of a storm producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain. The warning was in place for around two hours before being dropped.

Meteorologists at Environment Canada forecasted wind gusts that could reach up to 100 km/h. That’s strong enough to toss objects, potentially damage buildings and flip vehicle.

From images and photos on social media, it appears the system rolled through showcasing a threatening shelf cloud with little damage caused.

It was two years ago today in 2022 that the Ottawa area experienced a fatal derecho, so residents were on high alert.
