In one week OPP lay multiple charges in 4 separate intimate partner violence cases

The Killaloe detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, based in the Ottawa Valley, released some alarming statistics.

In a post on X, the force said they laid four charges against individuals in four separate intimate partner violence (IPV) cases. These arrests occurred in a week.

Police told CityNews there could be other cases under investigation and that “no two weeks are ever the same.”

“In reality IPV is a very under-reported crime. Many victims of IPV may, for their own personal reasons, choose not to contact the police. We encourage anyone experiencing Intimate Partner Violence to call the police or to reach out to resources available in the community,” a statement from the force reads.

IPV is define as an intimate relationship between individuals and may include a single act or violence of a number of acts forming a pattern of abuse, officials said.

On June 17, police investigated a sexual assault in Renfrew County, as a result, they arrested and charged a 15-year-old from Whitewater Region.

Later that same week on June 21, officers charged an 81-year-old for breach of conditions. The person from the Township of Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan was charged with failure to abide by conditions set out by the court.

A day later, on June 22, police investigated assault at a residence in the Township of Bonnechere Valley, where a 56-year-old was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault – three counts.
  • Assault cause bodily harm
  • Failing to abide by release conditions – 2 counts

Finally on Sunday, an assault at a residence in the Township of Madawaska Valley resulted in a 48-year-old being charged by police.

The names of the accused have been withheld to protect the identities of the victims. The accused will attend court at a later date.
