Crews put out Kanata bedroom fire in 15 minutes

Ottawa firefighters prevented a bedroom fire from spreading in a middle townhome after extinguishing the flames in 15 minutes.

At about 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, crews received a call from a resident of a two-storey townhome in the 500 block of Rioja Street in the Glen Carin area of Kanata South. The resident said their fire alarm was ringing and they smelled smoke inside the home.

Officials were met outside of the home by four adults and two children who had escaped.

After initiative a fast attack on the fire, crews then searched the home twice more to ensure no other people were inside.

By 10:35 a.m. the fire was under control, 15 minutes after the call came in.

The attic was also checked and fans were used to ventilate the smoke.

“There was no damage to the attached townhomes and the fire was contained to the bedroom before it could spread,” a post on X from the crew reads.

As a result of the incident, the four adults and two children have now been displaced.
