Dozens of drivers caught for speeding and various vehicle infractions in police blitz

Police in Ottawa are continuing to crack down on speeders and impaired drivers in neighbourhoods.

In the latest Traffic Escort and Enforcement blitz officers gave 36 provincial offence notices (PON), for speeding, improper or no muffler, window tint and failing to display two plates. Police also charged one under the Criminal Code.

Three drivers were issued court summons for having no insurance during stops, which included a minimum fine of $5,000.

“Ottawa Police Service and our policing partners will continue to focus on the dangerous and irresponsible driving that is occurring on our roads,” Cst Phil Kane of the Ottawa Police Traffic Escort & Enforcement Unit, said in a press release.

Two drivers in Barrhaven were charged with stunt driving; both were caught speeding in a 70 km/h zone.

One was doing 120 km/h near Strandherd Drive and Aura Avenue, the other was going 133 km/h near Strandherd and Dealership Drive.

In Kanata, a driver was caught going 146 km/h on Highway 417 near Terry Fox Drive. They also blew a fail on the roadside Alcotest and was charged with impaired driving with a blood alcohol level over 80 % mg. This driver also was issued a PON for having a radar detector in the vehicle.

The latest enforcement program is adding to the city’s already increasing number of stunt driving charges. According to the force, officers have laid more than 230 stunt charges as of July 19, a rise from July 2023.

Some areas of concern include major traffic arteries like Woodroffe Avenue, Fernbank Road and Greenbank Road.

Barrhaven, according to one expert, draws the young generation of vehicle lovers who can become problematic for unsanctioned gatherings that involve racing and illegal mufflers.
