Multi-level unit fire in Mechanicsville could have spread: Firefighters

Ottawa fire responded to flames and smoke in a low-rise unit in Mechanicsville on Thursday morning.

Calls came in at 11:09 a.m. from a monitoring company saying there was an active fire alarm in a multi-unit building on the 0-100 block of Carruthers Avenue.

Two minutes after being dispatched officials were on scene and confirmed on the fire panel an alarm from the third floor. Tenants had already evacuated at this time.

Using an advanced hose line, crews found the fire inside the bedroom of an apartment and extinguished it before it could spread. High pressure fans were used to ventilate while
