A warning from provincial police to be on guard against a fraudster in Carleton Place.

According to the Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a male has been going to homes in the Sarah Street area telling the residents that there is a lien on their property.

The fraudster claims to be working with Service Ontario and that to remove that lien, the homeowner must pay an up-front fee.

If people encounter this individual or anyone making such a claim, police say they should ask the person to leave, and when in doubt, contact Service Ontario directly.

Contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and report suspected or potential fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
