Body recovered during search for missing kayaker on Ottawa River

The Ontario Provincial Police have recovered a body in the vicinity of where a missing kayaker was last seen on the Ottawa River.

The search had been on-going since the early morning hours of Wednesday Sept. 18, when a kayak carrying two people overturned in rapids near the inter-provincial bridge on Highway 148.

A 34-year-old male was rescued by police with the assistance of private citizens, while a 30-year-old female was unaccounted for.

A body was located by police around 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Police have not been able to confirm the identity of the recovered body at this time.

The investigation is continuing  and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death which is suspected to be drowning. 

The missing woman has resulted in a days-long search effort involving the OPP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) along with Marine and Aviation Units from the OPP and the Sûreté du Québec.
