Child and man stranded on island prompted OPP lake rescue

Provincial police are reminding the public how valuable lifejackets are after a man and child had a close call in Tay Valley Township.

Officers from the Lanark detachment responded to Mills Lake, a small body of water south of Perth, for a 28-year-old and a two-year-old who had fallen out of a canoe. Police noted neither were wearing lifejackets.

The pair swam to a nearby island where they were stranded since the canoe had been blown away by strong winds.

Police used the canoe that blew to the shoreline to bring the two back to shore where they were checked out by Lanark County Paramedics.

“Thankfully this story had a happy ending, but the OPP encourages EVERYONE to wear a life jacket or PFD when on the water,” officials said.
