Ottawa man charged with impaired operation after collision near Carleton Place

A man from Ottawa is facing charges after a single-vehicle collision near Carleton Place.  

The Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to Scotch Corners Road in Beckwith Township shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.

According to the OPP, a car had left the roadway on a curve.

There were no injuries reported to the driver or passenger.

Following a roadside test, the driver was transported to the Lanark County OPP detachment for further testing.

Ryan McQuillan, 24, has been charged with impaired operation.

The accused was released with court date in Perth on Dec. 9, their licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Recently, OPP released its 2023 Annual Report, showing that impaired driving charges rose in 2023 to 11,142 instances — a nine per cent increase from 2022 and a 17 per cent increase since 2021.

Impaired driving charges made up six per cent of all roadway charges laid last year, the data shows.

Alcohol and drug-related fatalities decreased in 2023 with 67 fatalities compared to 84 in 2022. However, it is a stark increase from the 42 fatalities in 2021.
