6-year-old child dies after being pulled from Rideau River

A child has died after bystanders attempted to save the 6-year-old after they were pulled from the Rideau River.

Ottawa police said a child was reported missing in the area of Riverside Drive and Hogs Back Road around 5:10 p.m. on Thursday.

Shortly after, the child was seen in the water by witnesses who “immediately” brought them to shore. Bystanders started CPR before paramedics arrived and brought the child to hospital.

“Tragically, the child was later pronounced deceased at hospital,” police said. “Our thoughts are with the child’s family, loved ones, witnesses, and all those affected by this heartbreaking incident.”

Support services are made available to the emergency personnel involved and the child’s family.

The investigation is ongoing, officials said.
