Carleton Place emergency department is almost finished

The highly anticipated emergency department at the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital (CPDMH) is nearing completion.

According to a press release from The Mississippi River Health Alliance, the project timeline was adjusted but the construction is almost finished. It will be ready to welcome patients in the new year. The health agency is finalizing a grand opening before the department accepts patients.

“The new emergency department is a landmark achievement in healthcare for Carleton Place and the surrounding areas,” Brad Harrington, President & CEO of the Mississippi River Health Alliance, said. “While we recognize the community’s eagerness, taking the time to perfect every detail ensures that this facility will exceed expectations and become a cornerstone of care for years to come.”

The planned department has been in the works for years. Officials behind the project have stated it is “state-of-the-art” and the “high standards” the department will bring to the growing community. About $5 million in the first phase of redevelopment was directly from the community’s share of the project to fund the equipment throughout the hospital.

The department originally had a timeline of 18 months to completion — landing at April 2024 — but in the planning process the health alliance “revised” the timeline to reflect its “dedication” to building an upgraded addition.

The emergency department will be linked to the hospital. It aims to address the current space challenges and increase infection control standards. It will include 11 treatment spaces, and increase of five over the current department.

The project’s design aims to improve patient flow, whether people walk into the emergency department or arrive by ambulance.
