Firefighters rescue trapped person in downtown public washroom

At around 3:00 a.m. a caller reported smoke and flames coming from a public washroom near the Alexandra Bridge downtown.

Crews responded to the 500 block of Mackenzie Avenue and were told someone was trapped inside. Smoke was billowing from the structure and crews heard cries for help from the building.

Breaking the door down, additional trucks and crews responded at 3:12 a.m. A hose and firefighters piled into the building trying to douse the flames coming from the roof.

During the first search of the building, crews found the person and a medical area was set up to assess and treat the individual.

Within half an hour the fire was under control and a fire investigator was sent to the scene to figure out where the blaze started.
